Salzburg Destination Tip - By: Brigo
I can't rate Salzburg highly enough if you want a really nice long weekend. I love the general vibe and the positive associations it has with the film made about Maria Von Trapp - The Sound of Music. It's just great. If you get a chance, take a horse and carriage tour around the city to familiarise yourself with Salzburg. The cable car is also worth using to see the panoramic views. I believe the men's toilets have the greatest views of the panoramic vista but I'll try not to be too upset on behalf of the ladies as this monument was built long before we were even thought of and our parents. My main recommendation would be to travel on or around the 5th December. At this time of year, Salzburg is transformed into a vibrant magical location with the arrival of their Christmas markets. You can buy some really unusual Christmas decorations and of course the famous Mozart Chocolate seems to be the obvious choice for souvenirs to bring back for your family and friends - tastes good too. One of the really good things to watch out for on the 5th December is the Crumpleschlaus - the anti father Christmas. Each year on the 5th December the Crumpleschlaus come out in force to detect all the "bad" children and give them a good-hearted whipping with a twig. It's all good fun really, so parents need not be unduly concerned. The anti-father Christmas's are generally hideous looking thanks to their elaborate costumes. It is definitely worth a visit. Lastly, but possibly most importantly of all, Salzburg is the home of Mozart and it is no wonder he was able to produce great works when you see the city. It is truly beautiful, the architecture in the old town is quite inspirational and you just sense its specialness.
